Early Jets and X-Planes

The X-planes are a special group of mostly American aircraft that were purely experimental, made to research a particular aspect of flight that were all extremely radical at the time they first flew. All of them contributed something to the development of aviation, sometimes it was something major and profound that went on to advance the capabilities of aviation. The Bell X-1, for example was the first successful supersonic airplane and within a decade the USAF had added supersonic fighter aircraft to its inventory. Sometimes it was only to prove that some concepts weren't worth pursuing. The XFV-1 and the other tail-sitting fighters, for instance. We've also included the first jet aircraft of most of the countries that manufacture aircraft. They are not in any particular order.
