XF5U-1
Chance-Vought
XF5U-1. The XF5U-1 was to have been a heavily-armed very capable shipboard fighter
airplane that had the misfortune of being a piston-engine design that lasted
into the jet age. It never flew, though several were produced. It appeared as
a static display at several postwar Navy Airshows and was then broken up for
scrap. Only the historical record and models remain. The XF5U-1 is a popular
subject for radio-control flying models. The excellent flight characteristics
of the 'flying flapjack' planform lend themselves to R/C modelling as well.
