V-173 "Flying Flapjack". The Flying Flapjack was an attempt to make a powerful
and nimble fighter aircraft that had excellent low-speed handling abilities
for aircraft carrier operations. It flew surprisingly well and was almost a
true STOL aircraft. Charles Lindbergh wrecked one of these making an emergency
landing on a beach in New Jersey. It was a proof of concept airplane for the
Chance-Vought XF5U-1 heavy fighter of 1946
